Marge's Writing About Her Work:

Capturing a moment and savoring it; for me that is the pleasures of making pots and objects. Usually, I create series of pieces, starting at one place and duplicating that starting point. Then I act out, make the possibilities, and hope all the alternatives can all exist as a community.  I can see the “what if” of a situation. I liken it to shopping for clothes, trying on a look or feel. Maybe one will stand out.  Little series allow me to save judgments for a later time, when I can review how form and surface and my own sensibility evolved.

At an elemental level, there are many aspects of using clay and making pots that are related to my history and another time. Specifically, I don’t connect to Greek or Roman pots, to Chinese Imperial ware, Japanese folk pots, or terracotta cooking pots used throughout world cultures. I enjoy knowing about them, but for me, capturing 18th and 19th century décor and creating new forms- that is what I like!  I play with the abstractions of pocket and tote forms. I traverse the inside and the exterior, discover edges, and the silence of captive volume. This engages me.  And to the surface of these forms, I don a cacophony of internationally sourced textiles.  woven baskets patterns, and floral bouquets. Simple as that.

Bio

Marge Levy has been working in clay for years and years, but never full time. She has taught in studios, universities, and museums, while leading public and private organizations and schools as they evolved their educational and development programs. She travels as much as she can, observing patterns in textiles and amazing life forms in the depths of tropical seas.

Deborah Schwartzkopf

As a studio artist, she makes fabulous tableware that infuses life with purposeful beauty. Deb was inspired by the guidance of amazing mentors along the way. These important relationships fostered her desire to engage and build community through clay. Her adventurous spirit has taken her across the country and beyond to form a depth of experience, knowledge, and a supportive network.

In 2013 Deb established Rat City Studios in her hometown of Seattle, WA. RCS is her home and personal studio, as well as, a creative space for multiple studio members working independently. In 2022 she opened a sister studio, Rain City Clay in West Seattle. RCC is a community art center focusing on experiential learning through ceramics classes of all levels.

With over 15 years of experience, a Master’s of Fine Art at Penn State, artwork included in collections such as the Kamm Teapot Foundation, San Angelo Museum, and the WA State Arts Collection, numerous publications including Ceramic Monthly, Pottery Making Illustrated, and Studio Potter Magazine, she has been recognized and honored in her career as a maker.
