Soda Firing 9-23-26

This will be our 37th Kiln Firing. Follow along with the firing as I update this page on the hour.

Kiln Log:

I will log at the top of the hour here what temperature, gas, damper, and notes pertaining to the firing.

  • 8:00pm - 96ºF Top, 62ºF Bottom - START TIME

  • 9:30pm - 446ºF Top, 134ºF Bottom, South burner candling, Damper at 2”

  • 7:00am - 1016ºF Top, 761ºF Bottom, South burner at 0.5WC/ north burner candling

  • 8:00am - 1341ºF Top, 1053ºF Bottom, Both burners at 0.5WC, Damper at 2”, air low

  • 9:00am - 1417ºF Top, 1194ºF Bottom, Both burnersat 1WC, Damper at 2”, air low

  • 10:00am - 1581ºF Top, 1394ºF Bottom, Both burnersat 1.5WC,
    Damper in till flames were strong 1”, air low
    Started body reduction at 10:38 when 012 was down on the top. 1596ºF on top

  • 11:45am - 1674ºF Top, 1604ºF Bottom, Both burnersat 2WC, Damper 2”, air low-medium

  • 12:45pm - 1761ºF Top, 1706ºF Bottom, Both burnersat 2WC, Damper 2”, air low-medium

  • 1:50pm - 1857ºF Top, 1806ºF Bottom, Both burnersat 2.5WC, Damper 3”, air low-medium

  • 2:45pm - 1950ºF Top, 1911ºF Bottom, Both burnersat 2.5WC, Damper 3”, air low-medium

  • 3:45pm - 1992ºF Top, 1959ºF Bottom, Both burnersat 2.5WC, Damper 3.25”, air low-medium

  • 5:45pm - 2113ºF Top, 2095ºF Bottom, Both burnersat 2.5WC, Damper 3.25”, air low-medium

  • 6:48pm - 2137ºF Top, 2114ºF Bottom, Both burnersat 3WC, Damper 3.5”, air medium

    • 7:08 - started soda introduction. 5# of soda with 10 second sprays in one side of the kiln at a time. reduction after sparying resulted in really nice color and glaze variation. We brought kiln back up to temp after soda/ reduction cycles. Sod introduction took about an hour.

  • 8:48pm - 2161ºF Top, 2139ºF Bottom, Both burnersat 3WC, Damper 3.5”, air medium

    • Held kiln for 45 minutes after the soda introduction. Someone has mentioned that this would help with the lizard skinning that the glaze sometimes does. but it did not seem to make a difference. So in the future, transparent matte & sea green are problematic for this textural challenge. I can try getting it even hotter with a hold, but there was a fair amount of glaze running.

    • NOTE: Glaze when combined with soda runs. Please do not glaze all the way down to the bottom. Use glaze on the top 1/3 of pots or inside. Leave outsides more bare or use slips.
