Soda Firing 8-6-26

This will be our 34th Kiln Firing. Follow along with the firing as I update this page on the hour.

Kiln Log:

This is a log of the temperature, gas, damper, and notes pertaining to the firing.

  • 7:00pm - 83ºF Top/ 70ºF Bottom, KILN START TIME
    South burner candling, Damper at 2” Air on Low

  • 8:30pm - 451ºF Top/ 136ºF Bottom, South burner 0.5 Gas, Damper at 2” Air on Low.

  • 6:30am - 1286ºF Top/ 983ºF Bottom, South burner 0.5 Gas/ North Burner Candling, Damper at 2” Air on Low.

  • 8:00am - 1448ºF Top/ 1241ºF Bottom, South burner 0.5 Gas/ North Burner 0.5 WC gas, Damper at 2” Air on Low.

  • 9:00am - 1546ºF Top/ 1356ºF Bottom, Both burners at 1 WC gas, Damper at 2” Air on Low.

  • 11:00am - 1669ºF Top/ 1582ºF Bottom, Both burners at 1.5 WC gas, Damper at 2” Air on Low.
    Body reduction started. 010 down on top/ 012 down on bottom.

  • 12:00am - 1730ºF Top/ 1677ºF Bottom, Both burners at 1.5 WC gas, Damper at 2” Air on Low.
    Body reduction started. 010 down on top/ 012 down on bottom.

  • 1:30pm - 1864ºF Top/ 1814ºF Bottom, Both burners at 2 WC gas, Damper at 2.5” Air on Low.

  • 3:00pm - 1932ºF Top/ 1906ºF Bottom, Both burners at 2WC gas, Damper at 3.5” Air on Low-Medium.
    Cone 1 down on top, 04 down on bottom. The top and bottom are about 25 degrees apart.

  • 4:30pm - 2013ºF Top/ 1993ºF Bottom, Both burners at 2WC gas, Damper at 3.5” Air on Medium.
    Cone 1 down on top n bottom. The top and bottom are about 20 degrees apart.

  • 5:30pm - 2048ºF Top/ 2029ºF Bottom,
    Both burners at 2WC gas, Damper at 3.5” Air on Low-Medium.
    Cone 1 down on top, 04 down on bottom. The top and bottom are about 25 degrees apart.

  • 6:30pm - 2084ºF Top/ 2067ºF Bottom,
    Both burners at 2.5WC gas, Damper at 4” Air on Medium.
    The top and bottom are about 17 degrees apart. The kiln was moving a little slow in the last hour, so I bumped the gas up a touch.

  • 7:00pm - 2120ºF Top/ 2103ºF Bottom,
    Both burners at 2.5WC gas, Damper at 3.75” Air on Low-Medium.
    Cone 4’s down, 5’s getting soft. The top and bottom are about 17 degrees apart.

I am guessing soda introduction will start around 7:45-8:00pm. This could still change. Stay Tuned!
