Soda Firing 4-10-26

This will be our 30th Kiln Firing! Follow along with the firing as I update this page on the hour.

Kiln Log:

I will log at the top of the hour here what temperature, gas, damper, and notes pertaining to the firing.

• 6:30pm -58ºF Top/ 62ºF Bottom, Started the Kiln - South pilots/ burner lit. Candle, damper at 1”, air low

• 7:00pm -261ºF Top/ 90ºF Bottom, Candle, damper at 1”, air low

• 8:00pm -425ºF Top/ 157ºF Bottom, Gas 0.5#,
  damper at 1.5”, air low

• 9:00pm -663ºF Top/ 289ºF Bottom, Gas 1#,
  damper at 2”, air low +

• 7:00am -1327ºF Top/ 1053ºF Bottom, Gas 1.5# south burner, Gas at 0.5 North burner, damper at 2”, air low/medium

• 7:30am - small turn up on north burner to 1#

• 8:00am -1458ºF Top/ 1285ºF Bottom, Gas 2# south burner, Gas at 2 North burner, damper at 3”, air medium

• 9:00am -1623ºF Top/ 1507ºF Bottom, Gas 2.25# both burners, damper at 3.5”, air medium
  (Keeping air lower to create body reduction rather than just closing the damper.)
  Body reduction finished, both C/010’s are down

• 10:00am -1717ºF Top/ 1627ºF Bottom, Gas 3# both burners, damper at 4.5”, air medium

• 11:00am -1864ºF Top/ 1810ºF Bottom, Gas 2.5# both burners, damper at 5”, air medium
  Light back pressure out of top peep

  The kiln is climbing well! Both Cone /04’s are down.

• 1:00pm -2008ºF Top/ 1971ºF Bottom, Gas 2.5# both burners, damper at 5”, air medium
  Cone 1 bending top/ barely soft on the bottom.

• 2:00pm -2069ºF Top/ 2039ºF Bottom, Gas 3# both burners, damper at 5”, air medium
  cone 4 bending top : )

• 3:30pm -2141ºF Top/ 2119ºF Bottom, Gas 3# both burners, damper at 4.5”, air medium
  Cone 5 bending and soda introduction starting at 3:30pm with Steph, Dax, and me.

• 4:30pm -2170ºF Top/ 2152ºF Bottom, Gas 3# both burners, damper at 4.5”, air medium
  Cone 6’s bending. We introduced 3.5 pounds of soda in 2.5 gallons of water in 4-5 second sprays.
  Generally we lost about 5-10 degrees with each round of soda spraying.
  We let the kiln climb above where we started and gain 5-10 degrees to bring the kinl to 2170ºF.

• 5:00pm -2151ºF Top/ 2141ºF Bottom, Gas # both burners, damper at 4”, air medium
  I held the kiln from 4:45pm-5pm in reduction. Pushed the damper in more and lessened the air on the blowers. Flames were peeping out everywhere (although not as much in the front bottom). After the reduction, I turned off the gas and let the blowers keep going for 5 minutes with the damper wide open. I will close the damper in a few hours. It felt like a great firing overall!
