Soda Firing 10-1-25
This will be our 24th Kiln Firing. Follow along with the firing as I update this page on the hour.

Laura Skilles bundy helped me load and Joe helped with candling the kiln while I taught : )
We fit almost everything that folks brought. There are a few extra’s on the kiln pad.
I will log turn up and shifts in the kiln here approximately every hour.
Folks are welcome to come for soda-introduction.
I will post here when it will be as the firing progresses and I have a better idea of the time.
Kiln Log:
I will log at the top of the hour here what temperature, gas, damper, and notes pertaining to the firing.
5:30pm - 65ºF, KILN START TIME - South pilots/ burner lit.
9:30pm = 506ºF, Slow candle overnight
7:00am - 1197ºF, Lit second burner. It was a windy, rainy night!
10:00am - 1529ºF, Both burners at 1#, Damper at 2.5”, Air at low-medium
12:00pm - 00pm! Troubles in Burner City. A solenoid valve stopped working.
It took me a minute to rig it so the burner will still work, so the kiln is behind schedule : (
the good news is we are crusing agin and the kiln is evening out in temperature from top to bottom. Had one burner at 2# while I fixed the other. Then both on 2 with air at Medium high.1:00pm - 1729ºF, Both Burners at 2.5# Body reduction. Damper at 2”
2:00pm - 1796ºF, body reduction finished. The kiln is really evening up. Now the goal is a good climb! Gas 2.5#, Damper 3”, Air High
3:00pm - 1920ºF, climbing.
Gas 3#, Air high, Damper 3”4:00pm - 1992ºF, climing and evening temp.
Gas 3#, Air high, Damper 3.5”5:00pm -2055ºF, slowing a little
Gas 3#, Air high, Damper at 4.5”6:00pm - 2125ºF
Gas 3#, Air high, Damper at 5”7:00pm - 2164ºF, Gas 3#, Air high, Damper at 5”
Soda Time! 4 pounds of soda in 2 gallons of water. 5 rounds of spraying with Amy and Laura H!!! Thank you so much for keeping me company and helping! A few flame throwers to get a little more reduction at the end.8:00pm - 2163ºF, Cleared kiln and then shut off : )
