How to stretch your canvass. No, that’s not a typo. This a description for a post I wrote about the importance of stretching... is not about the kind of canvas on one of the studio tables you own. This is about another canvas, your body.  Incase you’re disappointed, here’s a link for how to stretch the other canvas, too!

This routine takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes, depending on how much time you spend with each stretch. If you can remember, place a glass of water by your bed the night before so you can have a few sips before your feet hit the ground. When you finally stand remember that it's easiest to make stretching the second thing you do, after water, so as to get ready for your day. Designate a spot in your room or home to stretch after getting up. When you're ready to go (sometimes you wont be, but start anyways) we are waking up our muscles, trust me they are moving just as slow as you are when you just get out of bed, so give them plenty of time to ease both into and out of each stretch or movement.

Also, keep in mind that this is not a challenge, there is no PR and no finish line. You do not win anything for touching the ground- good form cannot be emphasized enough. If a move hurts, ease it back till it doesn't, or remove the stretch all together. You want to feel the stretch but pain should not be involved. That being said, for any stretches that involve the ground if you have knee problems or pains, add a towel of mat beneath your joints.  With each move try and align with inhales and exhales, this fluidity tends to come naturally.

I’m not an expert, just a health enthusiastic and maker. In order to get the most out of my time in the studio I really have to listen to my body, but sometimes it’s tough to know what it’s telling me. Truthfully, It’s hard to convince myself that a stretch session in the morning/during my studio work will wake me up and better prepare me for my days ahead of me. But, (drum roll) it will!
